GIRRL study
What
Girls who qualify will be asked to complete 2 in-person visits at baseline and 6 months later.
One visit is an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The OGTT allows us to evaluate how well each person’s body able to clear glucose (sugar). Our lab is CLIA certified, so participants can share their results with their primary care provider. We will also collect height and weight, we will ask survey questions about their eating behavior, and ask questions about demographics.
The other visit is a behavioral visit. We will have participants come back to the lab and play a video game that gives out candy. We do this to see how girls learn from rewards.
Who
We are actively recruiting girls ages 8-15 years. We have flexible study visit times including afterschool and weekends.
Why
Girls in rural areas are at much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to boys or girls in urban areas. We want to understand how behaviors, like learning from rewards, and how growth and development influence type 2 diabetes risk.
Where
Visits take place at Dr. Shearrer’s lab on the UW campus. We are located in the Agriculture building.
